Seward is the county seat of Seward County, ZIP 68434, and had 7,643 residents at the 2020 census, up from 6,964 in 2010. The town was platted in 1868, and the railroad came through in 1873. It is home to Concordia University, founded in 1894 as a Lutheran teacher-training school, and to St. Gregory the Great Seminary.
The Courthouse Square and Seward's Older Brick
Seward's oldest masonry sits around the courthouse. The Seward County Courthouse was built from 1905 to 1907 in the Classical Revival style and was listed on the National Register in 1990. The Seward County Courthouse Square Historic District, listed in 1982 and roughly bounded by Jackson, 7th and South Streets, holds the brick commercial buildings around it. Old storefront brick needs careful, matched repair.
What older Seward brick buildings usually need
- Tuckpointing at parapets and cornices, where water sits longest and joints wear out first.
- Brick replacement where faces have spalled, using salvaged or closely matched brick.
- Lintel and sill repair above storefront windows, where rusted steel can crack the brick around it.
- Exterior painting of wood storefront trim and upper-floor window frames.
Our tuckpointing and brick repair uses mortar matched to the existing joints, which matters on brick this old. For building owners, our commercial masonry and painting covers storefronts, upper floors and EIFS.
A Seward job we are proud of. We repaired the walls at the Heartfelt Children’s Memorial in Seward after more than ten years of Nebraska weather. We tuckpointed each wall where needed, acid washed the brick and replaced damaged and cracked brick. The memorial’s own Google review is on our reviews page.

Homes Around Concordia and Across Seward
Seward's homes run from older houses near downtown and the Concordia campus to newer homes on the edges of town. Older homes tend to need tuckpointing, wood siding and trim paint, and gutter and fascia repair. Newer homes mostly need roof replacement after hail, siding repair and stone veneer work. Rental houses near campus often need exterior paint and siding on a tighter schedule.
- Roof replacement and repair in Seward, from wind-lifted shingles to full tear-offs after hail.
- Siding repair and replacement, including swapping worn wood lap siding for low-maintenance products.
- Exterior and interior painting for homes and rentals. Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, which brings EPA lead-safe work rules into play.
- Gutters, soffit and fascia, stone veneer and stucco repair on request.

Seward Hail History: 2014 and 2022
Seward sees serious hail. On June 3, 2014, the Storm Prediction Center logged 1-inch hail in Seward and quarter to golf ball size hail covering the ground at Cordova in the county's southwest corner. On the evening of June 16, 2022, it logged 1.75-inch hail just southeast and south of Seward. Hail that size commonly damages shingles, siding and gutters.
After a storm, check the roof edges, gutters, downspouts and the siding on the side the storm came from. Our hail damage repair covers roofs, siding and gutters. We look at the damage in person and write the repair into a bid you can share with your insurance company.
Building Permits in Seward
Inside city limits, the City of Seward Building and Inspection Department at 142 N 7th Street issues construction, plumbing and electrical permits and inspects permitted work. Properties outside city limits fall under Seward County. Because rules differ between the two, we confirm permit requirements with the city or county before any roofing, siding or masonry work starts.
The department's details are on the City of Seward Building and Inspection page. Office hours are weekdays, 7 AM to 4 PM. Buildings in the courthouse square district may have extra considerations for exterior changes, so we ask before we change anything visible on the front of an older building.
